Why technical commercial hiring is difficult

The defining challenge in this market is credibility. Commercial professionals are selling racks and cabinets to enterprise colocation customers, or wholesale space and megawatts to hyperscale operators, and in either case they have to hold detailed engineering conversations with buyers who are themselves engineers, working through long, technical buying cycles that can run for months or years. A candidate who interviews well but cannot earn the trust of an engineering audience will not succeed, however strong their commercial instincts.

Standard sales recruitment does not test for this. A generalist agency can assess a commercial track record, but it cannot judge whether a candidate genuinely grasps the product and the market or simply sounds convincing. That gap is where commercial hires in this sector most often fail.
